Mrs. Phyllis Berberich, retired Vermilion Parish educator and former Erath High School teacher, recently visited Mrs. Amy LeBlanc’s Family and Consumer Science 2 classes to speak with students about her nonprofit organization, Steps to Heaven, an outreach to families in crisis. Her presentation included information about the services her organization provides to grieving families following the loss of an infant. She also displayed the various day gowns, receiving blankets and isolette covers her organization creates and donates in partnership with two area hospitals’ neonatal intensive care units. Mrs. Berberich even shared her experience as a volunteer “cuddler” in the NICU at Our Lady of Lourdes Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The visit was so beneficial and educational that Mrs. Berberich plans to return again this school year. Mrs. LeBlanc’s students are planning to partner with her to assist with some of Steps to Heaven’s very special projects.
Interesting tidbit: Mrs. Berberich taught Mrs. LeBlanc English and Adult Responsibilities/Parenting when she was a teacher at Erath High School in the mid-nineties. Also, Mrs. Berberich learned how to sew in what is now Mrs. LeBlanc’s HomeEc classroom through the guidance of then-EHS HomeEc teacher, Mrs. Beth Hebert.
